I’ll evaluate the problem first and determine whether the disposal can be repaired. If it can't be repaired or replacement makes more sense, I can install a new disposal and make sure everything is properly connected and working.

Not every disposal problem means you need a new unit. Some of the common problems I encounter include jammed disposals, units that hum but won't spin, and older disposals that have developed leaks.

If a disposal is jammed, I'll try to free it and get it working again. In some cases, however, the disposal cannot be freed or repaired and replacement is the better option. I'll explain what I find before moving forward.

If your existing garbage disposal needs to be replaced, I can remove the old unit and install a new one. I normally supply the disposal, but I'm also happy to install a disposal that you purchase yourself.

When installing the new unit, I'll make the necessary plumbing and existing electrical connections so the disposal is properly installed and ready for use.

Don't currently have a garbage disposal? In many cases, I can add one to an existing kitchen sink.

The existing drain configuration needs to be evaluated first because not every sink is set up in a way that allows a disposal to be installed without additional changes. A new installation will also require an electrical power source. If one isn't already available, a qualified electrician will need to provide the necessary power before the disposal can be connected.

Most homeowners will be choosing between 1/3 HP, 1/2 HP, and 3/4 HP disposals.

For most households, I recommend a 1/2 HP disposal. It's usually plenty powerful for normal everyday use and, for the relatively small difference in price over a 1/3 HP model, I think it's the better choice.

If you cook frequently or use your disposal more heavily, a 3/4 HP model may be worth considering.

I strongly recommend InSinkErator garbage disposals. In my experience, they are a dependable choice and the brand I prefer to install.

Garbage disposals are convenient, but they can increase the chance of a clogged kitchen drain. Food particles passing through the disposal can gradually build up inside the drain piping.

If your disposal is working but your kitchen sink is draining slowly or has become clogged, I can clear the drain as well.

One simple thing I recommend is occasionally filling your kitchen sink about halfway with water and then releasing it. The larger volume of water helps flush food and debris through the drain piping.

A garbage disposal is useful, but that doesn't mean everything should go down it. Don't overload the disposal or try to force large amounts of food through it at once.

Never pour grease down the disposal. Grease can cool and harden inside the drain piping, eventually contributing to a blockage.

I also recommend keeping bones and rice out of the disposal. Bones can be difficult for a disposal to handle, and rice can create problems as it passes through the disposal and drain.

Using a little common sense about what goes into your disposal can help both the disposal and your kitchen drain last longer and work better.
